A ratings system you can trust

Three major organizations, Visit Britain (the official English Tourist Board), the Automobile Association (AA) and the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) together in 2000 agreed a consistent quality inspected scheme to classify accommodation. The scheme is voluntary and establishments have to pay one of these organizations a fee each year to cover the cost of inspection and registration.

Properties are visited annually by trained impartial assessors, so you can have the confidence that your accommodation has been thoroughly checked and rated for quality before you make a booking. The inspector books the accommodation just like any normal tourist. After staying the night as an anonymous guest and trying as many of the facilities and services as possible, he or she will reveal who they are and look around the rest of the establishment.

The inspections are tough and made without warning. You can rely on the quality of any establishment that is part of this scheme. More importantly, you can be sure that the establishment has a valid Fire Certificate, proper Public Liability and is a safe place to stay. You can be sure of access to your bedroom at any time of day and be able to use the bath or shower at any time of day. As obvious as this sounds, unfortunately some establishments outside the Inspection Scheme may have some rather strange restrictions.
